SL 2 - 10/22/12

Great work folks. The trig unit was tough but you did well. Next we're on to the IA. This is a Type II Mathematical Modeling IA. The idea is to find a mathematical function that represents the change in winning heights for Olympic high jumpers over a period of years. Of course there is no perfect function, so the exercise is really about trying various functions and discussing the relative strengths and weaknesses of each. You are to the initial attempt manually, that is by hand. After analyzing your approach, you will go on to use technology to try to do better. The actual functions that you come up with are, of course, not the point. The point is to come up with them in a mathematically supportable way, and then discuss how well they fit the data, their limitations and applicability. More on that in class. I've scheduled the Red Lab for Wed and Fri and have links below to some supporting documentation. Most importantly, know that you will not have time in class to do an adequate job on this project. You have plenty of time (see schedule below) but there won't be enough in class. So plan your time over the next couple weeks accordingly. See you in class,
Mr. Alei

SL 2 Schedule: Week of 10/22/12         (Last week - 10/15/12)
